On Monday Bruce and I went to a thanksgiving service for Syd Porch. He turned 100 just a couple of months ago. It was a lovely service full of anecdotes about Syd and lots of laughter about some of the thing he said and did. It certainly wasn't morbid and a real celebration of his faith in God. His son, Rev Barrie Porch took the service and all the remaining 6 children, plus wives and grandchildren were there also supporting Beryl (Syd's 90 year old wife). I discovered a lot I didn't know about Syd. He lost his mother and older brother in a drowning accident when he was only two years old. His father was originally a farmer but married again and went to live in Sheffield where he became a shoe repairer. Syd had a great love for music and sang in local eisteddfods here in Devonport and in Launceston. He was a keen gardener and Beryl was (and still is) a wonderful cook, well-known for her delicious jam. One of the most amazing things about this man was his keen mind. He was always reading some new book and, incredibly, took up painting at the ripe old age of 99!!! Way to go!
